Teaching Philosophy

My core values as a teacher are connection, communication, and curiosity. As a flute instructor with over fifteen years of experience, I have had the privilege of working with students and ensembles representing all ages, backgrounds, levels, and interests. Every person is inherently valuable, capable of growth, and has unique gifts to share with their communities. Each of my students is respected as a developing artist with a distinct perspective and vision. In getting to know a new student, I focus on meeting them where they are. I enjoy the process of discovering what motivates and drives each student as I tailor my approach to best meet their needs. I facilitate a sense of belonging by encouraging my students to express themselves, validating their thoughts and questions, and letting them know they are not alone.

My primary objectives include reinforcing critical thinking skills, confidence, and artistic independence. As a mentor, my role is to serve as a guide for students as they build knowledge and skills around musical literacy, technique, interpretation, expression, historical context, and performance practice. I provide direction for students as they study standard and contemporary repertoire, learn how to identify style and genre, locate quality resources, and build problem-solving strategies. I promote autonomy and engagement in the learning process by setting clear goals and expectations in partnership with my students, not as measures of success, but as reminders of their high potential. I strive to be transparent with my own struggles and mistakes to demonstrate how there is no single path to growth or one definition for success. Showing students how to experiment, take risks, listen with an open mind, ask for help, and deal with frustration is paramount to a life-changing education. I am committed to supporting my students as they work toward individual goals, navigate challenges, and discover their true capabilities.

My teaching methods are centered around fundamental concepts of breathing, tone, technique, and articulation. The development of these basic tools serves to unlock freedom of expression as the instrument becomes a natural extension of the body and voice. I emphasize the connection between the mind, body, and voice as students discover how to effectively convey musical ideas and intentions. Each lesson involves numerous opportunities for self evaluation and experimentation as I ask students about their process and musical decisions. Habitual patterns are questioned and challenged as students practice awareness, presence, and embodiment. Students are trained not only how to read music fluently, but how to faithfully interpret the score, discover clues from the skeletal melodies and harmonic structures, and make educated conclusions about the composer’s intentions.
