Heidi Keener 

Professional Flutist & Teaching Artist

As a performer and teaching artist, Heidi Keener enjoys a multi-faceted career, bringing energy and creativity to each collaboration. Heidi recently earned a DMA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison as a Paul Collins Distinguished Fellowship recipient and she holds performance degrees from Western Michigan University and Youngstown State University. Her primary teachers include Conor Nelson, Timothy Hagen, Martha Councell-Vargas, Kathryn Thomas-Umble, and Heather Young-Mandujano. She also studied Baroque flute with Jeanne Swack


Heidi is a member of the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony and has performed with orchestras and ensembles in the Midwest, including the Milwaukee Symphony, South Dakota Symphony, Southwest Michigan Symphony, and Youngstown Symphony Orchestra. She was a quarterfinalist in the 2020 NFA Young Artist Competition and has placed in the COFA Young Artist, SEMFA Ervin Monroe, NFA Piccolo Orchestral Audition, and WMU Concerto Competitions. Heidi was also the winner of UW-Madison's 2022 Wind Ensemble Concerto Competition and Irving Shain Piano and Woodwind Duo Competition.


Heidi began accepting private students in 2007 and has been working with individuals of all ages, levels, and goals for over 15 years. She has filled in as a lesson instructor for the flute studios at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and Western Michigan University while professors Jonathan Borja and Martha Councell-Vargas were on sabbatical. Heidi has worked as an instructor and chamber music coach for the UW-Madison Summer Music Clinic, WMU High School Music Seminar, and Kalamazoo Kids in Tune and has guest taught at various high schools in the Madison and Kalamazoo areas. She serves on the Wisconsin Flute Festival’s Competitions Committee and has taught guest classes, presented workshops, and adjudicated events at the Wisconsin Flute Festival, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Whitewater, Western Michigan University, and Youngstown State University. Heidi began working with the Madison Flute Club as an intern in 2019 and was appointed as the new Co-Artistic Director in 2023. She conducts the MFC Adult Choir.
